Be sure you have room in the box.
These things are GFCI size.
Yeah, from what I've seen they're larger, and are gonna be harder to cram into a box. Otherwise, can't think of any issues to be concerned with (other than they probably draw a very slight load when nothing is plugged in, if you're really pinching electrical pennies.)
USB receptacle
The existing recptacle has 7 conductors; ground, white to screw terminal, black to screw terminal, 2 white in plugins on back, 2 blacks in plugins in back. New receptacle has three wires, white, black, green.
Just connect all whites together, all blacks together and green to ground? Get another receptacle?
You can connect all like colored wires together. It does sound like that box is stuffed tho.
Yeah, I don't think I'd try it with that outlet.
I just had one of those receptacles in my hand. You are not getting that in a single gang box with 7 conductors without a hammer.
It is bigger than the typical GFCI.
7 conductors (14ga) require 14 cu/in and if they are #12 that is 15.75 cu/in.
Add 2 more conductors for a device (4 cu/in). 14ga (18cu/in) stuffs a 2x3x3.5" box 100% (the biggest one they make)
12ga gets you bigger than any single gang box I know of (20.25 cu/in).
That assumes a regular device, not one of these big honkers.
USB receptacle
I appreciate your assessment. I believe the box is 20.4 cu in. but you are right it is tight and may be too hot (eeeeek!!). Could install larger box and have lots of space might be best option.
Cut out the box, install a double, and install an outlet that is ONLY USB outlets on one side, like a Cooper 7750.
