Thanks for the responses guys. I was hoping that there was enough consistency to the foam for there to be a rule of thumb on installation. For example, with 2x12s on 16″ centers, if I drilled a hole x feet back from the edge, that the expanding foam would fill the cavity before it went out into the roof line.

I've been seeing a lot of discussion of the spray in foam being used now for insulation. I have a home where I am going to be renovating the existing 3rd floor, including installing new hardwood flooring. Footprint on floor is about 1750 sq ft, behind a mansard roof.
While my walls are well insulated, I know the only thing keeping the wind out of the floor joists is a square of fiberglass. Would it be worthwhile and cost effective to drill a series of holes in the old subfloor and have them shoot foam aroung the entire perimeter? I don't see a need to insulate the entire floor, just the perimeter (being careful not to overfill the floor joists and block the attic ventilation).

*Good Morning Carlos,If you are going to be installing a new hardwood floor anyways, shouldn't you consider openning the existing floor planks around the perimeter so that you could inspect the area in question and then be able to properly install a rigid insulation or even foam spray any gaps in your system. In my opinion, it would be wise to look while you can and make a decision on what you actually see. These are things you can do on your own without any contractor involvement or costs.
