I’m usually pretty good at laying out rafters, hips and ridges using my calulator, but today I had to do a “Bastard” Valley, two different pitches. Had to use the string line and speed square to find angles. Is there a way to figure the angles of the verticle cuts where the jack rafters go up against the valley and ridge, or is it hit and miss, making several trial cuts?
I’m all laid out now, would like to know for the next time, it seems to make the help respect you a little more when you just do some figuring, then hand them a rafter or valley or hip, and it fits.

I can do it, but I use a 3D CAD program. I seem to recall a thread on this forum, way back before Prospero, where some guys were doing it using calcs.
Heck, it's just trig and solid geometry. I know I could figure it out if you gave me a turorial with the calculator and a little time. But the CAD program has become an extension of my brain, and I guess I am stuck.
Dave,
Click on my logo and browse around my site. You’ll find what you need there with six ways from Sunday on how.
Dave,
Go to Joe's site. There are a lot of discussion there about bastard valley framing including diagrams, using calculators, just a framing square, etc.
You will find a lot of great info there
