valley shingles and flashing

I have just learned of the California open valley method of shingling. The labor saving must be incredible for the roofing company. Yet the quality seems substandard, especially when my teachers had the rain lines varying from each successive coarse only 3 to 4 inches. When can I expect to have problems with this roof? What will they be?
