Ask a local realtor.
*Thanks for the advice "Crazy legs" I'll ask. To clarify, I want it off the property and the post/beams and siding up to 24" wide and 15' long is just to "nice" to have the fire dept burn down.
*I'll give you a quarter for it.b : )
*Aha, so you want to sell it as used lumber. If you are reasonably close to Mexico, you can get a contractor from there to pay you, disassemble the barn, and truck the wood down there where trees are scarce. Or, you can hire your own demo labor and sell the wood.-- J.S.
*James - Where are you located?
*The Barn is near Rockford IL. (75 miles NW of Chicago)Jim W
*I don't think that there is a lot of value in the standing barn due to the cost of taking it down and reworking the wood. But I would much rather see it go for that rather than burned.Try getting bids. Contack local demo contractors and see if they or any know of anyone that is in the wood reclaimation business. Also you can try an internet search "reclaimed (also slavage or recycled) wood".J.M. Hoffman Co.1262 Douglas Ave.Flossmoor, IL 60422Phone: 630-845-9036Fax: 630-845-9039J.M. Hoffman Co. is the midwest's only sawmill/millwork company specializing in reclaimed antique heart pine, Douglas fir and white pine.http://www.carlsonsbarnwood.com/These are just a couple.
*I'd try web search for recycled lumber. barn beams etc and contact one of the co's that recycles these things.I doubt if a realtor would have any idea, and it seems likely that the value will depend on condition i and species of the woods involved.
*Before contacting a recycler you'll need to know what wood these timbers are made of.
*James, Find out what species the posts and beams are, then check the classified ads in(forgive me taunton) Old House Journal. I seem to recall quite a few ads of dealers in reclaimed timbers. Depending on the species, condition, and dimensions, you may have quite a gold mine on your hands. Hope this helps.
*Thank you everyone for all the good leads and great advise. I will certainly check them all out. Thanks Again!May All Your Projects Be Foible Free,Jim W
*James, there are plenty of companies that will purchase your barn for salvage.Check with http://www.greatnorthernbarns.comThey have a listing with barn sizes and photos for sale. You might get an idea what they are selling for that would give you an idea on the value of what you actually have. Of course location plays a big part.Good Luck.
*Jana's got a good point. Determine the condition of your barn (e.g., if you've got bugs, foget it), the type of timbers, and the relative value of having them dissasembled and shipped somewhere. In my area, there are lots of old barns, but since they usually have both bugs and a zillion nails (and are in really, really bad shape by the time they need to be removed), they usually either bulldoze them or give them to the local fire department. Good luck in your search.
