yup... on the heated side....
*Mike. Why two VBs? Or am I misreading ron's post? GeneL
*since the paper does not work :o), Mike only listed one VB.
*exactly.... but you knew that , gene
*Why not 2 (or 3, or 4) -- as long as they are back-to-back it doesn't matter, right?
*right ? ... right !
*Why not forget about faced batts and poly, and focus on the real problem: stop air from getting into that roof/ceiling assembly. If you stop the air movement, then having a semi-permaeable vapor reatrder is actually going to help with drying incidental moisture that may get into the assembly.Actually we need to know two other things to deal with this question responsibly: 1) where is this roof (climatically-speaking)? and 2) are we talking vented or unvented roof?
*You can use both Poly & Kraft back as a vapor barrier together. Check out the attached article form Certainteed, note pg. 2 (#5 Installation).
*Guys, I have the same question as Ron about his cathedral ceilings. I have styrofoam chutes first then 6 and 1/2 inches of fiberglass batting with kraft facing down ( what is not stained or messed up from flying squirrels) . I wanted to put that special Stocote plastic over it but hubby says why. We bought 1/2 inch Lowe's foam/ fiberglass board to go over it instead. Hubby then wants to put up fir strips then paneling or bead board or something like that. Our roof rafters are 2x8's. So I guess R value would be total of 22 plus what little bit value paneling has. Of course we have ridge vent, soffit vents on the 4 foot overhangs and big lakeside 8 foot overhang with gable vent. Only half of our house 1200 foot home is cathedral ceilings We started putting up that foam board under batts in rest of house. Do we need the plastic there too? I say yes because kraft is torn and pieced { it too has been up since 1990. We pay as we go and work on this place when we can. Hubby says he just wants to put up the foam board under batts and skip the plastic. We are in Ky. and it can get cold. I also would like to put foam board on walls too over the batts that I installed back in 1990. Hubby says no to that. I want to seal the seams on the foam. NEED ADVICE PLEASE . HUBBY HATES DOING EVERTHING TWICE ETC. No drywall up yet or suspended ceilings yet. Thanks, Jean Roberts
