Hi all,
Read differing responses in the past as to whether to put a vapor barrier behind hardiebacker in a tub surround. Looking to get differing opinions again….
Any and all advice appreciated.

The idea is to protect the framing from water damage with a moisture barrier. SOP for us is to always put 15 lb.felt between the hardibacker and the wood or metal studs for insurance, just in case water gets past the hardibacker. As an added insurance we paint on two layers of Redgard over the hardibacker before the tile goes on. Water won't do anything to the cement board, but it will to wood and metal framing. We seen wood turn into mulch and steel studs so rusty that the screws pull right off along with the green board, on some bathroom remodel; no moisture barrier at all.
