Hi All!
As my name suggests, I have a old farm house (about 1880) and have been restoring it over the course of the last five years. This spring I will be putting on siding (cedar). I heard that I should put a quarter inch of “fan fold” on prior to placing the siding on the house. My concern is this:
I already insulated the house and added a vapor barrier on the inside under the drywall and If I add fan fold to the outside I’m afraid that water or water vapor that gets into the wall cavity will not be able to excape and will cause mold. The fan fold is used to smooth the rough board sheathing of the houses exterior so the siding looks better and more smooth. However fan fold is a closed cell foam of some sort so I dont think it will allow vapor through very well.
Any suggestions on what to do? or maybe this is not a problem as fan fold is commonly used on many retrofits.
-Thanks

Fanfold: hmm
Reminds me of the bad old siding days. Fanfold used to be touted as insulation:!!!!
Beware anywone selling that crap
If you have insulated and vb'ed than your question should be what is a style consistant with my house.

We would appreciate it if you could fill some of that in, especially where you are located!!
Thanks!

This is part of the instructions for vinyl siding installation. You are putting up cedar siding. The fanfold will do nothing for cedar siding installation.
So forget the fanfold. I don't know crap about how to do wood siding, but my preference would be to remove the existing siding before putting up the cedar. Once the existing siding is down, then you can evaluate what should go under the cedar siding...my GUESS is furring strips on top of housewrap or 30# felt.
Someone else should be along shortly to give you more authoritative advice.
