Forgive me if this has been covered recently, but I didn’t find it in a search.
I will be adding an addition to my house that includes a large gable addition to the front of my 12/12 pitch roof. Both the existing house and the addition will have cathedral ceilings. Currently, I have ridge and soffit vents, and would like to keep this same approach. My question is about the rafter bays that dead-end into the valley rafter. Here, there is no place for air to enter at the bottom end. What is standard pratice?
All of the rafters are 2×12, 24″ oc. Since the shorter rafters do not need to be that heavy, I was wondering if it was acceptable to notch the upper edge near the bottom ends of these rafters to allow airflow. Or would drilling largish (~1.5″) holes be better structurally?
Thanks.
