Is a hipped roof only ventable through the ridge beam or can ridge-vent be applied to the hip ridge? Roof is existing – 2×6’s. Boring holes in the hip-rafters will considerably weaken it, don’t ya think? – especially if they are applied above the insulation rather than in the center of the rafters.
Also, if you define a hipped roof as having a front, a back and 2 ends (4 sides total) how do the rafter bays in the ends have sufficient vetilation when they have such a minimal (in area not structure) connection to the ridge beam?

If there is any type of ridge vent for hip rafters on the market I'm not aware of it. My question is, why would you want to?
The heat in the attic will rise to the highest point. If the ridge is properly vented with enough vents in the soffit you should'nt have a problem. If you want more you could possibly add two small gables with louvers on each side at the top but it would change te look of the house. Another option would be to install a working cupola or two depending on your style of house.
If the hot air is contained in the rafter bay by insulation or by the attic ceiling, it will rise up to the hip rafter and stop.I've heard of notching the top corners of the jack rafters so there's a continuous channel up the ridge, but I'm not sure you could get enough cross sectional area that way to carry the necessary air flow.
That's what I was thinking. Not enough cross sectional area that way to carry the necessary air flow. Therefore it is pointless. As for the ridge providing enough/ any, The ridge ends where the hipped roof begins. Where do you vent to? I have looked in many books and none adress this common issue.I am stumped.F
Stoopid question, just to be clear...................
If I am reading you right, there is not a flat ceiling, you are finishing the underside of the roof framing??

At first I thought you were referring to MY question. HA!Yes, the underside of the roof (the ceiling) will not be flat. Think bastardized cathedral ceiling.F
Sounds like a bungalow............tear off the roof and sheathing, add spaced sheathing then put it all back on again.
There, you got your venting........I think?
Maybe Mike Smith will see this. He's prettygood with insulation and venting.

Thought of that but Client doesn't want/ won't pay for the new roof. He is planning on having the whole house reshingled next fall. The sheathing in this area is in tip-top condition. Don't know about the rest of the roof sheathing.F
I was only kidding.
Think they're stuck.
What about spray foam urethane-y stuff??

We usually vent the hips using a shingle over vent (coravent, rollvent, etc.) You have to cut back the sheathing and unlike the ridge you can't do this continuously. You have to cut a little (1 1/2x 8) notch in the sheathing for each rafter bay. This is fairly easy and looks good too. The cap shingles will appear to be floating above a dark band.
That's how I do ridge vents. Roll out the vent material and shingle over it. I just thought there might be an opportunity for water to run into the vents. Thamks, F
