We are about to commence a very large project on our Victorian home. In the past I’ve made reproduction casings (5 ½” wide) using a Delta molding cutter on my cabinet saw – a slow process but not too bad for 1 or 2 rooms. Our current project requires about 800 linear feet of casing (see attached drawing) – my plans include purchasing 4/4 S4S popular. As there is always room in one’s shop for additional equipment – I am contemplating a molder purchase. I would be keen to hear thoughts on:
– Should I sub this out to a millwork firm, and if so to who
– Sources of popular in the Chicago area (5 hour drive is acceptable)
– Recommendations on a molder, considering the attached molding profile (brand and source)
I should mention that I have quite a bit of baseboard to make as well.

I did my entire house on my Jet 12" planer/moulder. I faxed the profiles I wanted to Burns Power Tool in Fall River Mass. I had the knives back in about a week. It took about a day and a half to cut all the main casings but it was worth it. I posted these pictures already in another discussion but I'll put them here again for you. My Jet planer works great and I would recommend it to anyone.
I don't understand! I cut it twice and it's still too short!
Can you give me an idea of the cost per inch to grid your knives? I have a Williams/Hussey. I need to find another source since I willbe moving soon.
Mine for the W&H run close to $70/inch with shipping for customs. My bude has another place that's over 60.
You guys want to be careful with faxing detail drawings. Faxes can skew the shape or stretch the dimensions in thge linear direction, especially if either end has themal roll paper instaed of plain paper on flat bed.
Include notes for sizing they can follow with a note to not scale from fax drawing.
that mistake cost me big on a seven inch set of cutters once..
Excellence is its own reward!
Pif, I fax over scale drawings to, with measurements of all the dimensions. The last set of knives I got were $220 dollars a set, and the profile was a little over 3 inches long. So just under $70 an inch.I don't understand! I cut it twice and it's still too short!
A few years ago, I used Ballew saw(1-800-cut-rite) and their charge was $10-15 per inch and that is for each cutter(high speed steel). So, a 3"set of knives would have been $60-90. I need to call them back.
Or, are you guys talking about carbide?
Ballew has web sit also.
