Some may think vinyl siding is an absolute no-no in a “historic” renovation, but others may strongly disagree.
Those others may include the powers-that-be who oversee and approve permits for work in Evanston, Illinois. While walking about there recently, and photographing details that could be seen from the sidewalk, I came across this one, on Judson, a few short blocks in from the lakefront.
I had to look twice to realize it had been redone in vinyl. The details were quite well done.

Well, to me it's pretty obviously vinyl, but a good job. The main give-away for vinyl (in a narrow lap pattern) is the concave surface. It has a look that one "senses" pretty quickly. Then the channel is another give-away.
This one at least didn't have the recessed window look of over-siding, and the channel is neatly done.
Would be interesting to see how they flashed around that door and some of the other details. Vinyl often makes decent flashing difficult.
And one wonders why some vinyl manufacturer doesn't introduce a little random variation in their product. You want things regular enough to be neat looking, but some slight variation in surface flatness, etc, would greatly reduce the plastic look.
Here's a few pictures of my house I did myself. I used 16' siding & have only 4 seams in the entire job. I added more details than I started with. I also stripped the 2 layers of siding shingles on the house to see if there was any water or insect damage & also get rid of the lead paint. I think I heard my house sigh a few times during the removal of all the shingles and the million nails used.
Yeah, that's nice. Most of the blasted channel is hidden, making for a crisper look. At first glance it looks more like a FC job.

Your house looks very nice. Good Job!! Eliminating seams is the #1 thing to shoot for when planning vinyl siding. If people would build better looking houses, you wouldn't have to worry so much about using vinyl siding. Yours is a perfect example.
I think the long, flat lines should always be broken up somehow.

Gene, a couple of houses in my neighborhood are vinyl with painted wood trim.
They look quite nice from the street.
Getting rid of the vinyl corner boards, J-trim, and wrapped aluminum trim can do wonders.
