Vinyl tile alternatives?

| Posted in General Discussion on December 9, 2003 12:15pm

Hello,

I was looking for info on vinyl tile and installation, did a search, and came across a number of responses from builders steering clients away from vinyl.  What is the alternative?

I want to replace the floor in my bathroom.  The floor area is 5’X9′.  I don’t want hardwood and I do not want stone or ceramic or anything with grout lines (which is why we are replacing the floor now).  I’d mention laminate flooring (pergo) but I have seen laminates get plenty of negative response here, too.  What other options are there for a damp room like a bathroom?

Thanks – Jason

What's wrong with vinyl tile? It's a small room, vinyl is easy to work with, and there shouldn't be a problem if you glue it down. Glue it as if it were commercial tile after peeling off the paper backing. Any DIY book should cover this. You'll certainly spend less time, have more otions, and come out cheaper than with any other alternative. Get the thicker vinyl, by the way, not the 85 cents stuff.

I got the impression from the search results here (searched "vinyl tile" and "installation") that the there were a LOT more voices against vinyl tile than for, but didn't find any opinions on alternatives.

One question I was looking to answer was whether I should use adhesive in addition to that already on the tile from the manufacturer (Armstrong).  Thanks for suggesting that I should use that.  No, I won't be using the cheap tile, we found a "Best" quality tile from Armstrong that we will be using.  I'd much rather change the floor years from now because I am sick of it. . .not because the floor is coming loose.

Well the first alternate to VCT is sheet vinyl. And I like that for a bathroom as there are no seams.

Then there is true linoleum flooring, available in both sheet and tile, I think.

Then there are some highend rubber and urethane tiles.

Here's a Armstrong Vinyl Composition Tile (V.C.T.) 1/8" commercial floor I did recently.

The stuff is bullet proof but the down side is that you have to wax it.
