VINYL TILE OVER VINYL (ASBESTOS?) TILE
HELP. I WANT TO TILE OVER A BASEMENT TILE FLOOR (ON CONCRETE). CURRENT FLOOR IS 9″ SQ TILE. APPROX 30 YEARS OLD. RUMORED TO CONTAIN ASBESTOS. HOW DO I KNOW FOR SURE? WHAT HAS THE ASBESTOS (TILE OR GLUE)?
ALSO, REGARDLESS OF ASBESTOS AND TO SAVE DEMO TIME, I WANT TO GO OVER FLOOR WITH 12″ SQ. VINYL TILE. SHOULD I PUT DOWN UNDERLAYMENT? SHOULD/CAN I GO DIRECTLY OVER EXISTING TILE? ANY SPECIAL PREP (ie RUFF UP)?
ANY TIPS ARE MUCH APPRECIATED!

the tile has the asbestos...
hyper clean the floor (remove all the old wax and general crud) and use a cement appropriate fer vynal to vynal... everybody sells it...
Is this old floor still solid??? at 30 years the installers used asphalt based adhesive and is it really is glued down all that well... gravity is probably doing more to hold the floor in place than the oringinal cement... if the old floor starts to let go yur in for a hellava mess...
BTW... all caps is yelling and considered poor form...

or just use the self stick and warm them with a plumbers torch.

those gazillion YO tiles dont bond well to the self sticks... It'll come loose sooner or latter..
glue downs are cheaper and more durable... more goof proof...
the self sticks would hold like they are suppose to after he softens the old floor with a tolulene or similar but why be fatal about the job..

I caught this one a while back but was torn between Adam's and Larry the cable guy " Now that's funny- I don't care who you are!"Had to pick one between Adam and Jaime and The Blue Coller Guys. I found this one to be indicitive of how I can view my day when it goes belly up. Are you having flashbacks of the recent crown job???????Just know I have no claim to this tag exept here and use it like I used "Where's the beef?"Remember that one? Mike" I reject your reality and substitute my own"

O.K. now that we have that out of the way---
Welcome to BT.
As for the Asbestos--You can wet a corner down, pry off a small piece and send it out to be tested--Small price to pay for piece of mind,
I have heard it to be in the backing of the loose tiles and in the glue used to install it so I would consider both to be sourses of asbestos,
If you have the ability I would go over it and start anew--Nothing wrong with covering it.....
In preping it I wouldn't RUFF it up at all I would just give it a good cleaning and maybe use an adhesive primer and then go to town with the new floor.
I would consider a 1/2 ply underlayment it the old tile is groved or texttured in any way because the pattern will ghost thru the new floor where you walk.
Good Luck with your project and again Welcome to BT Mike
Your 9" tile has asbestos. All floor tile was made with it until the mid l970's. "It" the 9" tile is not loose you can go over it. Remove the wax and go for it.
And in the end, if you decide to remove the tile get some dry ice, put it on the floor and push it around. The tile will pop off.
