Can you move the newel out away from the starting step more to get the desired height? I have had to set a few volutes without the patterns that show newel and balaster placement and had to experiment to meet code.I know that full scale drawings work well, and I ahve a good grasp of stair mathmatics, but I still have to use some creative guesswork on stuff like that.I think that measurement from the nosing up is refered to as rake height.

handrail height out here is 36'' measured from the nose of the step.but after cutting the easing and attaching the rail, the 36'' height is now towards the rear of the second step third step, etc. I haven't done a volute type handrail for too long obviously .thanks in advance

well,it seems that newel and volute placement isn't written in stone. yes, I did try numerous newel placements, but the easing was not steep enough to maintain the 36" at the second step. The only way would be to have a 5" longer newel post.. the homeowners and I deceided comfort and estetics were important as well so the 36" is about mid-tred..the customer is happy.. final answer..
