I just installed a new range hood in a kitchen and used a Broan 647 wall cap. The spring doesn’t keep the flap closed and it leaks lots of cold air. I’m looking for a different product that truly seals well with the fan is off, or tips on retrofitting this one. I’ve spent lots of time on the web and haven’t found a better option yet. My duct work is 7 inch. Any suggestions? Thanks.

There was a thread on JLC titled "Kitchen Stove Vent" in the Building Science Forum. See post #12 as well as others. You may have to search for the thread. Sorry, don't know how to post a link.

I had a situation where the location of a vent hood allowed wind from that direction to flop it around. Taking it out and swapping something else (not much out there that betters the usual) wasn't a cheap option-the connection inside was covered. Since this was for a cheap guy, I went to the van and grabbed a couple big fender washers. I siliconed those onto the flapper. Plenty of pressure to open it when the fans on, didn't flap around anymore in the wind.
There you go, cheap and might work. If in view, be artistic and stack several different sizes on top of each other.
