I am currently a general contractor, we do additions, remodeling, decks, and other home improvements. We also frame and trim a couple of new homes each year as a sub. I had two guys working for me until Friday. My lead quit to go work for a larger company. My other guy is becoming less and less reliable and isn’t experienced enough to run a job. Left with the having to go through the hiring proccess again I am thinking about finishing the work that I have on the books and then letting my other guy go. What I find more and more lately is that I am happiest when I am doing trim work. So that is what I want to do. I just want to be a trim sub. I feel that I could make as much money and have less headaches as a trim sub. I just don’t really know how to market myself to the other general contractors. Most of the g.c.’s in my area are pretty loyal to their trim subs. How do I get my foot in the door?

By placing one in front of the other?
Simple as that. You may find that when you specialize you'll get more calls than you did as a GC. Loyal as anyone is its always good to have 2-3-4 subs with the same trade in case one is busy which usually is the case.
Keep doing what yer doing to feed yourself and faze yourself into trim work a bit at a time till it takes up all yer working time

Doing that I made more money with many less headaches that I did as a GC. I specialized in millwork and doing specialty jobs that most GCs are not skilled enough to do.
