Dear all,
I am building a new laundry room and in Peter Hemp’s “Plumbing a House,” (Taunton Press) he describes heavy duty washing machine cut off valves based on a hot/cold single handle tub/shower valve “made by a major manufacturer.” Would any of you all know who makes such a nice valve to relieve pressure on the washing machine hoses during non-use? Many thanks to you in advance!

Robear,
In the on-going remodel of our home, I put one of these in the laundry room, and it works great...so far. I don't have the box, but I bought it in the plumbing department of Home Depot or Lowe's. Think it was about $20.00.
The unit comes with it's own pvc box to mount in the wall. The valve is all brass, and works very smoothly. It cuts off both hot and cold with 1/4 vertical turn of the handle.

The one that I recently installed is by Oatey, got it at the home center ina kit that icluded a recessed box with provisions to connect a 2" pvc drain as well. Pretty slick.

They don't exactly relieve the pressure. When you shut the valves off the pressure in the hoses remain trapped. But, if one breaks, you only get a few ounces out.
Nowadays you can purchase flexible hoses made of stainless steel. After your original equipment rubber hoses have about 5 years on them, replace them with stainless and they'll last the life of the appliance or longer.
I believe Watts Regulator makes one; it is basically a simple lever shut off that shuts off both hot and cold at the same time.

The above link is to a shutoff valve that automatically turns the water supply off when the washer cycle is complete.
For aditional protection you can couple this valve with a water sensor...I think the model # is Watts A2S-LS...that will turn the water off when it senses water in the pan or on the floor, even if the washer is still running.
