Newbie hear, longtime reader of FH. I need help with a damaged drywall ceiling. Water from above caused the drywall to swell abit. Screw dimples and seams are now visible. I have cut some small holes and verified all is dry with no stains. Now do I remove all upper cabinets from the kitchen that was installed a year ago and re& re..or can I sand mud and paint.? Thanks in advance..

if there is no mildew, and no buckling, I would just re-tape, finish and texture to match, and paint.
Your answer is yes.

Thanks, and my bad I am just learning the ropes to this format.
The strength of the drywall has not been comprimised? Should I re screw?
My plumber is eating this one, so he will be happy with the second opinion.
Thanks again.
"Should I re screw? "
DW so NO...... ;-)...but, since you are going to "skim coat" anyway, push on the ceil @ the frmg members. If you have any movement, it will not hurt to drive a couple of screws in there.
Easier now than after it's repainted.
If the drywall has swollen at all, it's strength HAS been compromised, but not enough to worry about. So long as there's no sagging and it can be refinished to a suitable finish there's no NEED to replace it.But sometimes it's easier to replace than to deal with the finish imperfections that may be present, and if there's even a small part of it that needs to be torn out then you might as well tear out the bulk of it -- not much difference in effort redoing a 4x4 inch piece vs a 4x4 foot piece.

Thanks for the info everyone, The drywall feels solid and I would most likely replace it all if the upper cabnets did not go right to the ceiling.
