Need to convert lab results in mg/L to “Grains of hardness per gallon” (imp) in order to set up the rejuvenation frequency on new softener.
Total hardness as CaCO3 is 288 mg/L.
Plumbing supplies clerk said 27 ppm. He might have got the units wrong. ppm is the same as mg/L. I think.
Any help appreciated.

PPM is the same as Mg/L are the same. You divide PPM by 17 to get GPG as I recall.
When we used to test for hardness it was only in "grains of hardness". Never heard grains per gallon but it might have been. In Maytag dishwashers, if the water was harder than 8 grains or more, the soap dispenser wasn't big enough to counter the hard water.

Gallon
Per Liter (mg/l)
or Parts Per
Million (ppm)
I got this from the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service web site.
Assuming that 10.5 gr/gal = 180 mg/l
Then your 288 mg/l is about 16.8 gr/gal. (10.5 gr/gal X(288/180))
