I have a problem with excessive noise at the outflow pipe of the gas water heater. It sounds like a gurgle or rattle. It is only noticable when the recirculation pump is on. Any ideas how to stop the noise?

Could be a heat trap. A heat trap is kinda useless in a recirculating system, so you might as well remove it.
What is a 'heat trap'?
They are sort of valves on the inlet and outlet of the water heater. They are supposed to keep convection from pulling hot water up into the pipes when no water is being drawn. They're maybe two inches long, in what looks like a regular threaded nipple.
