Went in to the big box stores… saw how much they are charging for shoe moulding and baseboard. I nearly $#%( in my pants. Decided to make my own since i had a 1×8 on the site… used a router and a table saw. $5 for an 8′ stick of shoe… lol! $10+ for 8′ baseboard. Going to buy 1/2 sheet of mdf and make my own baseboard… just need to get a nice ogee bit… Takes a little more time, but I cannot justify spending that much for mouldings…

Making your own mouldings is not a bad way to save money on product, but it is a bad way to cost you money on time! Sometimes you have to figure in what your own time is worth and whether or not to make your own product is worth the effort. Besides, if you visited a lumber shop and bought the product in bulk the prices are significantly different than the BBox stores. However, the idea that you are considering making base out of MDF is probably not a good one. There are places you can cut corners and places that you can't. Trim isn't one of those in my opinion. And making anything out of MDF that is in a high impact zone is never a good idea.
