Do I have a chance of getting wet dog smell out of carpeting using a professional carpet cleaning serivce? Anyone out there ever tried or is replacing the carpeting a must? There are no urine of feces stains. Thanks.

Depends how many years he was wet.
Sure is a lot easier than dead cat smell. Yep, I'll take a wet dog over a dead cat any day!

I beat the drums & bang the cymbals for Nature's Miracle. Works on ALL sorts of peculiar animal type smells. What about dry baking soda liberally sprinkled over the carpet. Let sit for as long as you can stand it & then vacuum up. (I'm assuming that the carpet itself isn't wet but the dog was?)Brush w/the vicious side of insectlife today for both the neighbor's pitbull puppy, Beauty & PlantLust. Note to self: If you hear highpitched keening yelping & the puppy runs far away, DO NOT let curiosity lead you to explore what could have caused that reaction in a dog.
and if you get the bottle / jug of that stuff with the skunk on it....

Throw a dead cat in the room for a week.
Amusing but not exactly the help I need! Plus where do I pick up a dead cat?

The tail works well.
Just sprinkle a bunch of baking soda on it, mist it with a little water if you live where it is dry, and let it set for a day or two, and then vacuum it up.
Most of the things that smell, are acidic, and the soda reacts with it and absorbs it.
Soda will eventually get pet urine out, but it might take a few applications.
I've never really had a problem with wet dog smell, but I've certainly had other odors generated by my carpets due to my dogs...
Professional cleaning almost always lifts the odor out, so you have really good odds of getting rid of the odor.
However, it would be worthwhile to figure out *why* it smells that way. Primarily, I would be worried about moisture in the sub-floor reacting with dander & whatnot that the dog left in the carpet. In that case, moisture would be the real problem and the odor is just a symptom.
If you go the pro cleaner route, shop around. The truck mounted hot water extraction technology is dated now. The 'avant garde' folk are using a process closer to dry cleaning. You get a better cleaning, less residual water in the carpet, and less damage to the carpet.

Thanks for taking the time to help.
I would be worried about moisture in the sub-floor
I tore up some carpet that was completely soaked through by dogs. Underneath, the subfloor was very stained as well.
What I eventully did was use a good stain-blocker type primer on the subfloor. It was effective in getting rid of the smell (luckily).
