I would like to remove the old stucco on a 1930 two storey home. I would like to cover the outside walls with insulation, wire mesh, and then new stucco.
I have insulated the walls with fiberglass insulation to achieve an R20. I nailed 2x2s to the inside of the 2×4 outside studs to create a 6″ outside wall cavity. I realize that I may not require the extra insulation but I want to replace the stucco and I feel that it the house is going to be scaffolded, it would be a great opportunity to add some more insulation. Whatever the break even point is for the extra insulation, it will become more and more cost effective as the price of natural gas goes up.
What thickness of foam would be recommended? One inch thick would provide me with R3.75. One and a half inches would provide me with R5.62. What gives a good balance of insulation and practicality. The thicker I go, the longer the nails, screws, etc. I also have to deal with the window sills…
My biggest question is what are the big disks called that act as washers for securing the insulation foam to the outside walls. Does anyone have a brand name that I can use to track down a supplier in Canada? I saw some in a lumber yard that worked with either nails or deck screws. I thought that was a great product but I can’t seem to find them again…
Thanks,

You're talking EIFS sythetic stucco?
A great product, but if improperly installed can ruin a house by trapping water.
I don't know how forgiving it is for the inexperienced....
