This is a bit of a long shot, but I wouldn’t be too surprised if someone comes up with it.
The house is five years old. The builder is out of business. The owner has a sheet of paper with a hand written list of the products used in the house (3/4″ roof sheathing!).
The roof shingles are listed simply as “Praire Wood”.
These shingles are trying to look like architectural shingles, but they are just the one layer of shingle with different colors of granules painting the effects. Really ugly up close.
The house faces west and there is a huge field accross the road. They have had problems with shingles blowing off for four years. I’m not sure what they have tried to do regarding the builder, etc.
From the conversations I’ve had, they are probably going to put on a new roof, but if the brand of shingles can be tracked down and the color is still available they might go ahead with repairs instead of replacement.
Thanks.
And for those who remember and are wondering, no, I didn’t get the $17,000 job.

See I told ya $17k was way too low. The customer thought you were proposing sub-standard material or unsupervised labor or something. A fly-by-night contractor fer sure.
What the hell were you thinking?

Clay,
Thanks. I did see those. Those are three tab shingles that are not trying to look like something else.
The shingles in question are not tabbed, they are solid across the 36", but there is a bunch of "painting" done in wide strokes to look like architectural shingles. This is an ugly roof (IMHO).

Rich, sounds like the 'New' Horizon series from CertainTeed. I think the older Horizon series were the same, but had rain lines as a three-tab shingle. I know praire wood is one of the colors offered in this line. TBOMK, you can still get them.
Hope this helps, Mike.
isn't there a strip on the backside of the shingle with a code # to tell you what the shingle is?
Pull one off and see.
"isn't there a strip on the backside of the shingle with a code # to tell you what the shingle is?"
Well, now I just feel stupid. Can't believe I didn't think of that.
Thanks. I'll try to get back there and check that out.
