find a big room in the house and do all of the doors in there with an airless, we use a combination of airless and hvlp for everything else.
the hvlp is used for stuff that has lots of nooks and kranies

Lacquer...airless
Latex on doors...airless
Enamel on doors...hvlp
Small runs of trim in shop...hvlp.
Airless is a Titan 440i, and a Graco XR7, and a Wagner 440+ with a hopper on top, all with Graco Contractor guns. The HVLP is a Graco 5 turbine unit, and 3 Sharpe conversion guns for the shop compressor.
Keith,
What laquer and what mix do you use shooting laquer through an airless? I have always hauled stuff to my shop where we do cars and mechanical stuff and shot things there with laquer and urethane clear. But if you can get a good job out of the airless I sure would be interested in that. DanT
You can shoot lacquer straight out of the 5 with an airless and a fine finish tip. I'd argue that in a new home setting, using solvent lacquer, your results will be better and more hassle free than doing it with a cup gun. Less opportunities for white fuzzies, for instance. Just don't use the same pump you put latex through. Lacquer is thin enough even with the smallest of pumps it's like shooting gophers with an elephant gun. Plenty of power."If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man." - Mark Twain
As far as a mix, I shoot Dayco laq. thru any of them thinned a quart to a gallon. Dayco is a pre-cat, with a seperate sanding sealer and topcoat. I use Magnalac mostly, and some Sherwood(Sherwin Williams) the magnalac I shoot straight, the sherwood is a bite.
Of all of the airless I have, I like to shoot laq. out of the Wagner 404+ the most. It's the cheapest, has a 2 gallon hopper on top, and is not a true airless, not a pump, but a diaphram pump, I use a 211 tip for trim and a 311 for doors, all out of a Graco contractors gun. I've never shot any paint thru it, in fact it always has laq. thinner in it if it's not in use.
Of all the finishes, I like Dayco the best....it takes longer to build, usually 3 coats of sealer and 2 top coats, but it sands soooo easy, powders up like crazy....and looks awesome. The Magnalac is done in 3 wet coats, and sands good, with little to no dust....fast and dirty in my opinion, but does make money with less effort and time.
If you want a really fine finish, try spraying with a 410 tip or a 408 tip(double orifice). With a good quality lacquer, they last quite a long time but still cost about $35.00 each. Make sure you use a super fine filter or they are a pain to get unclogged
Keith,
Thanks for the info. I will give that a try next time I am doing some laquer. DanT

Oils - cup gun (rare, rare, rare)
Solvent lacquers - either gravity feed or pressure pot, depending on the size of what I'm spraying
Waterborne lacquer (which is what I use on interior trim) - pressure pot, good filters, lotsa air
Latex enamels - airless, FFT
Ceilings - airless, 517

Would you do interior doors with the waterborne lacquer? We use a lot of factory-primed hardboard-skinned doors, solid-cored Masonite 4- and 6-panels. Which brand lacquer?
Spray hardwood doors all the time. Masonite gets paint. SW Kem Aqua"If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man." - Mark Twain
