I bought a shut-off valve for a new bath faucet. It’s for 1/2″ copper. My plumber will be installing it, but I’m trying to have all the parts on hand to save him time (we always work that way and he’s fine with it). But after I bought it, I noticed that the box says “non sweat”. Does that mean it’s not for a solder connection? Then what would it be for since it’s not for a compression fitting?

Open the box pray tell!

I did look at it. It's not threaded. It's a perfect fit on 1/2" copper and appears to be brass on the inside. I don't think it's for crimping because it would have said that the box (I assume).
I thought my lack of plumbing knowledge had overlooked something obvious (like shutoff valves that are glued on). Maybe it's just something as simple as the right part in the wrong package.
1/2" nom. sweat?
Look again perhaps?

Doh! Thanks, that's it. It's that I wasn't wearing my reading glasses... you see, I'm not as smart without them.
One of the wise guys on one of our crews will ask me if I'd like him to "sharpen my glasses abit".
Sucks loosing your eyesight. I'll be fifty next march, been wearing rx readers for about two years now and it's time to go get an update.

My eyes are doing pretty good, but man o man I wish I'da taken care of my hearing better. I'll be 47 next month, and I bet I only have 50% of my hearing.
ALL you youngsters: Wear ear protection as faithfully as safty glasses. You'll be glad you did.

huh? whaddya say?
I'm there to, likely not to that extent. Friggin lawn mowers can be the worse culprits and most folks don't even get it.
The other day I was at a site and the highway department was vaccuming out catch basins close by. HOLY CRAP! They need to evacuate the neighborhood before they do that.[email protected]
I have worked with Vactor trucks too and when the hose starts wistleing it will make you cry. That has to be one of the worst sounds I've ever heard. Like standing next to a jet.
Headstrong, I'll take on anyone!
Like standing next to a jet.
worse. Like torture and I was 100 ft away. I can't imagine what kind of ear protection they are wearing.[email protected]
I have a permanent Threshold Hearing Shift in both ears in the speech and high frequency ranges. Makes me a OSHA recordable with the change in standards a few years ago.
Real bummer from a personal standpoint. Any, I an mean any, low frequency background noise and I can't hear any normal volume conversational speech. We took our grandson to see the latest Harry Potter movie, and I missed half the dialoge because the background music was at the correct frequency range for me to hear, but not the speach. Oh well, the pop corn was good and refills were free :)
I need to bite the bullet and get hearing aids. Our insurance doesn't cover them, and the VA dropped coverage for anyone but combat vets. Doesn't matter how many jet engines you were around as they turned up or how many 5" guns were fired around you. If you weren't in a combat zone, they can't help you, unless you fall into a poverty level income (family).

IF ALL ELSE FAILS, READ THE DIRECTIONS! Sorry.
I've seen literature on plumbing connections that you "crimp" with a special tool - no solder. Haven't used one.
there is a type of connection ( elbows couplers, shutoff valves etc ) called shark bite. you push it on 1/2 in copper pipe and twist about a 1/4 turn and it is done seals quick no compression no sweat just quick. but about 60 % more cost then sweat elbows etc. but very little labor. and even comes with connecters for hooking to pex to copper but there is all reasdy compression fittings for that. shark bites have been used on several jobs ive been on and its quick. dont know how long they last but it looks good so far. like i said just extra cost.
