I can copy and paste text from an old post, put it in the search textbox and click search and it still won’t find it.
Well, sometimes it does, but not reliably.
Even after experimenting with it, I can’t figure out what the search feature is actually searching.

Search me.
I don't know how it works or what its criteria are either. The old search (before the fall of Breaktime) was slow... very slow. But after one waited long enough the results were always useful. I found information that was meaningful and on topic. I liked the ability to input the time period for the search. This new search thing will return results almost immediately but they are useless. It brings up posted discussions from years ago. Not too meaningful when one is trying to find information that's dealing with present day building practices.
Yeah, it's not clear whether Google scans in "real time" or uses a web crawler to index the site. If it uses a crawler then it could take days or weeks for a post to be able to be found.
It's ironic that the biggest search engine in the Universe totally sucks in their "Custom Search" (see logo above). Google offers boolean and keyword searching in their service, but not here.
But, perhaps "Custom Search" translates to "you get what you pay for", which in Taunton's case might mean nothing is being paid for.
