The City of Los Angeles building department was telling me that I can get 1 hour exterior fire rating by either using stucco or sheathing with a product called “Gypsheet” (not sure of spelling) and cover with any type of siding material.
Has anyone heard of this product? What’s it composed of?
Thanks!

Yes, Jim, Malibu requires it. Check with your building inspector up there. Here is the drill.
In fire areas, you'all (I'm from Southern Russia) need a one hour fire rating. That can be accomplished by either:
1. Exterior Stucco with no exposed wood.
2. Gypsum Panels underneath the wood siding. This is essentially green board, but a slightly different formula because it is both fire rated and water resistant. All joints have to be taped and mudded with a fire resistant mud. Fisher Lumber in West LA or Terry Lumber in San Fernando have the stuff. These panels go over our shear wall.

It is grey gypsum board. 5/8" thickness will be required for a 1 hr. rating ( if your siding does not provide any protection ). Check your requirements for fastening of rated gypsum sheathing in your area in order for the gypsum panels to be considered wall bracing. Be sure not to over-penetrate fasteners.
