I am going to be on a roof to repair a chimney and the owner would like me to seal the joints formed by solar panels installed in the 70’s when that sort of thing was groovy (of course energy crisis like bell bottoms seem to come full circle ). The panels sit in the rafter bays and protrude above the roof deck about 2 inches. An aluminum flange rests on the rafter and the flanges of adjoining solar cells overlap on top of the rafter. Stainless steel screws run through both flanges into the rafter. There appears to be some sort of original caulk in between the flanges but removal of the panels to recaulk this is not practical. The roof is a fairly steep pitch so should I simply tar the joint or use some sort of membrane? Any help from someone who actually has some experience here would be a great help. Thanks.
