Mine is made by 3-M, the 6000 series for severe dust and for fumes I use the cartridges that they make for this same mask I use the 1/2 mask whenever I can as I work in a hot climate. I have used the full mask, but boy was it hot. Sometimes you have to though.

I'll have to second the recommendation of the 3M 6000 series. I use the full face on a regular basis, keeps things out of my eyes better than glasses or goggles. Be careful about choosing correct cartridge. Unless I need to be protected from fumes I generally use the pink P-100 dust filters which have a larger surface area and have less resistance. I also found that I can get an organic vapor and acid gas combination filter for about $0.50 more than a organic vapor cart. which is nice if I am etching concrete. If you wear a full face resp. while painting be sure to get some of the peel off see through lens covers.Edited 10/23/2005 5:20 pm by Renoun

Sorry to be a stickler, but fumes are solid condensate particles: usually the product of metal being vaporized during welding. Protect against them with the pink cartridges. Vapors or gases are what the organic vapor and acid gas cartridges protect against.Amateurs talk strategy, Generals talk logistics.
But I also vote for the 3m. Good product.

Intresting tidbit of info from 3m, I use mine for organic vapors, and was told by 3m that the cartridges lost protection any time exposed to air, and the cartridges needed to be stored in bags to get better life...
A very good friend of mine is a 3m rep, and he told me the same thing.
Yeah, the sorbent medium absorbs water vapor etc. as well as the target gas (what you're trying to protect against). As soon as you open the package, the clock is ticking on those cartridges. 3M has software on there web site that lets you estimate cartridge life and set a replacement schedule.Amateurs talk strategy, Generals talk logistics.
Justin, Paul, and Jersey,
When I took my Lead Safe class I was told that OSHA rule is that the cartridge needs to be changed every 8hrs after opening the seal. I dont do that but I guess thats the spec.
I change prefilters all the time, but I leave my organic until I start to smell or taste particles. Thats probably dumb, but I have also done poly'd pine floor and started to taste the finish. Im going to check out that estimation chart.

Pretty serious looking mask.
Is this the half-mask?

Renoun,
Thanks for mentioning, I was just going try to find a source cartridges/mask for that issue. I may get a mask that I use just for concrete etch and stain, but its good to know there is a combo available. That also might get me to change my filters more often. Smelling polyurethane for a few minutes is one thing, but a chlorine gas hit is another animal.
