I will need to make a spline for use with 2 grooves in a hardwood floor install (engineered). what should I use? run down and grab some small stock of oak or something?

Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
1/4" oak plywood, and cut with the face grain. That makes the spline floppy because the thicker core veneer is cut across the grain, but it provides more resistance to shearing when installed.
Some flooring stores have spline or slip tongue in stock, and will sell you a piece or two.
