Looking to buy a couple new roofing nailers - looking for advice on which to buy and why
*
Only a semi-pro roofer, but I have a Max and it works real well. It is the brand the local wholesaler sells so naturally they said it is the greatest. Never has jammed or misfired. I think don't get a Paslode unless you want to always look for Paslode brand nails. I know there are about 20 different ones to chose from.
*I've only used two types, the Stanley Bostich and the Porter Cable. Between the two I'd choose the Stanley. Unfortunatley I've already bought the PC. I've not had any real 'problems' with it it just just doesn't bounce along as smoothly, seems to kind of hang up as it fires and disrupts the flow. Plus their guide and the rest of the metal under the basket stick down too far and get in the way. I finally removed it and this helped alot. Here in florida it's six nails per shingle so smoothness is everything.
*Shoeman, while I've been using a older Senco, with no maintenance, and no problems; the brand to get if the price doesn't frighten you away is the Hitachi. I'd buy one or another Senco anytime, my local airtool repair man swears at the Hitachi's... no business for him.
*I own a Paslode 15 degree coil roofing nailer. It can use anybody's nail as long as they are 15 degree (which is the standard by the way)It works great and I have had no problems with it yet.The most important thing about roofing nailers is to keep them clean.
*Shoeman,I use a old Bostich that I like a lot.If you use it a lot it will need a new pawl every 2-3 years(cheap repair cost).I also use a new paslode gun which works VERY well if you keep it VERY clean. The Bostich seems to tolerate dirt better, but the paslode runs smother and faster if it is clean.Good Luck,Stephen

Having worked for a manufacturer of pneumatic tools, I can tell you that the Max tool will last the longest, and perform the best - bar none. In fact, Bostitch roofing nailers used to be made by Max (about 5 years ago, and before)... It will cost you about $100 more, but it's worth every penny in time saved and less jamming. Contact STAFDA (specialty tool and fastener distributors association) at 800-352-2981. They can give you a number for Max who will then in turn give you a distributor. Good luck!
