I have had a 1″ gas line run by my plumber for a 60,000 BTU Cook Top — there has been some discussion that 1″ might be too small if all 5 burners are on “HIGH”. Can I get away with 1″ and just realize that I might have just 2 on at one time on High and maybe another one on simmer etc?
Have a real fancy ceiling that we installed several years back with all the intention of having a gas cook top when we got around to doing kitchen — we ran the line but now there is some thinking that 1″ might be too small. Other than the stated impact, are there any other downsides?
Tks – Live in DC and using gas from Washington Gas and Elect — all the best Dudley

1" line should get you quite a long way from the regulator with no problem, unless there are other appliances teeing off the same line. According to Code Check, 1" line can supply 160K BTU of NG at 150 feet. If you are running a furnace, boiler, water heater, etc. off the same line then some calculating might be necessary.
In our house we have a gas range, a Takagi water heater, and a propane heating stove, and all 3/4" lines.
David tks -- I have a furnace and a HW Heater in the furnace room and about 50-60 feet away is the cook top -- I think I'll go with what we have and hope that the DW is happy -- tearing the ceiling out and running a larger line is just not fesiable at this time - Unless you think the Cook Top will not work -- Dudley
I mis-spoke above... it's 160 cubic feet per hour, not 160K BTU. Based on the lengths you are listing, your piping will be more than adequate.
Depends on local gas btu/cu ft supply (usually 1000+/50), length of the run, what other gas appliances are being served and configuration of the system, and the type of gas (natural or propane.)
As a very general rule of thumb, 1" black iron should be more than sufficient for nat gas unless it is a really long run, OR the whole system is already max'd out.
Assuming 1000 btu/cu ft local supply, 100 ft of 1" black iron should usually be able to supply up to 160,000 btu appliance assuming the system is already max'd out.
But what else is on the sytem and how far from the meter are those appliances?
rjw - HW Heater and Furnace are with in 10 ft of the meter -- cook top is 60 feet of black pipe away - tks -- Dudley
Have you checked the manual? What size connection does it have? Greater than 1" ? I have a Wolf range with 6 burners and an over that runs just fine on a 3/4" line
