I am creating a 10ft wide span through the back wall of my garage. The top plate is 3 2×6’s on edge. I intend to add to this to make the new header. What do I need to span the 10 ft? And what is the best method for attatching?

As it's always said when someone asks this:
Gable or Eave end of the roof? Roof Area bearing on this beam? Live and Dead roof loads? Snow load? Any Ceiling? Live and Dead loads on these Joists? What else might this beam support? What is there to use as footings for the posts supporting the beam ends?
Sorry but it's not as easy as "A 2x10 will span 12 feet no matter what it has to support"
*And on top of all that, the most my local inspector will let a doubled 2 x 12 span is 9ft.
*Jason,I don't think you should add to it. You will end up with a very short opening. I don't think that two 2x6's stacked on top of each other will give you the strength of a 2x12. But then again I could be wrong.d. William
*Jason, You may need an engineered beam,or some steel ,an I beam or flitch plate.Going back to Ryan's note the load will set the requirements for the size of the header. Good luck, Skip
