What table to use to calculate beam/lintel size.
I’m designing a small cottage/carriage house and am wondering which table i can use, if any, to calculate the size of a floor beam/lintel.
I was going to have an engineer provide a detail for the building department, but before that, I am wondering if there is a span table that would apply?
The floor joists will run parallel to the beam and sit on the exterior walls. The member will be under the rake wall for the second story. However, I need a structural ridge beam to be supported mid span. With height limits on the building, we need cathedral ceilings and no collar ties. there is no way to support the point load from below.
Total span is 13’/4m. Can this be considered a lintel or do I need an engineer to calculate for the point load?

Standard span tables are for distributed loads. Spans for point loads need to be calculated.
