what tool did ya mail order….

JeffBuck | Posted in Tools for Home Building on October 12, 2003 11:46am

Thought I’d do a take off on the “what tool did ya buy” marathon….

Got home Thurs to a big box from tool crib.

The recond’d DeWalt 14.4 drill was there …. better value than 2 new batt’s for the old drill ….

also got my new Senco narrow crown stapler … oil less version….

plus both a 50 and 75 ft cord … now I’m addicted to lighted ends … one came with a 3 way splitter …

the kreg jig is appearantly on back order.

Since the book cases I planned on using it for are also on hold … not a big deal.

Made sure to walk both the wife and the kid thru the new tools….

for some reason …… the wife wasn’t as impressed as the kid?

He was very excited to help open the boxes( and try out each tool) … she tried to act as if she almost didn’t care …. but I know better …..

Received my set of books that taunton had on sale for 1/2 price a couple of days ago and I'm waiting on a 3' portable aluminum work stand from amazon. I have one of these and decided to get another to use as saw horses and to support my new aluminum extendable walk board that I got at Lowes for 50$ less than toolcribs price.I had the stand shipped by free freight so I'll have to wait a couple of extra days but that saved me 9$.

Be VERY CAREFUL!!!! What you have going is the beginning of an addiction, see, you start to enjoy your day more and it goes quicker when you know that when you get home you have a fed-ex or ups box waiting. Soon you want to come home to a box everyday, then it's 2 boxes. Then comes the day when you have no boxes to look forward to, and the day drags, and you have no energy....sucks man! Then you dread the mailman, because he's got the envelope with the bill for the boxes.....junkie city man.

bought one of those adapters that go on a 20 gal propane tank to fill the smaller caniserts and Harbor Freight has an 880 lb electric winch that I can use to lift the hard top off the convertable -- beats the rope and pully system I use to have

I got the Milwaukee angle grinder and accessories I asked about in a previous post. It came from Coastal Tool  fast enough to almost be instant gratification, yet still allowing for the anticipation  of the big brown truck coming up the drive. The dogs and I both jump around when we hear it. I also bought some Carhart flannel lined jeans from Duluth Trading Post on sale last summer. I couldn't resist even though I live in Florida. I take them with me  to North Carolina each month hoping for cold weather.

A while back I ordered a Robolazer from Tool Crib. At the time, they also threw in a line generator and tri-pod. The pod alone usually goes for $75+. I have used it to install a few kitchens and have found it to be a really handy gizmo. No more fretting about whether or not the transit has gotten kicked, plus, the remote control allows one man to level a job with nothing more than a stick with a pencil mark on it.

I checked the accuracy of it(+/- 1/8"/100ft) and found it to be dead on their specs.

I'm wating till that Robo comes back to the "recon'd" section.

      That'll be my next click.

I forgot to call today to see when my Kreg is gonna be in stock .... thought it was when I called it in.

You really should heed the advice of keith, it's a realy nasty slipperly slope, If I don't get something in the mail at least once a week I go through withdrawl... and I fear it can only get worse...

For the Kreg jig, did you guys try other sources besides toolcrib?

My new digi camera showed up today. Nikon 3100, not quite so fancy as your's but I figure it's obsolete or at least there will be signifigant advantage  in buying a new one in a few years anyway.

It takes some good pics, and I printed out one on the real expensive fancy glossy paper, on the printer I got two weeks ago (see above for a pattern) it looks just like a reg print from film.

ive seen kreg jigs @ lowes and with pocket screws on the display.

As for the robotoolz, i bought it under the PC label. Love it!  Coupled with a laser detector it can be easily used outdoors on a grade stick :)  THough not a true rotary, it still works.  I bought the robotoolz laser jamb stick, talk about handy indoors.

Ordered Jet's new deluxe 14" bandsaw.  Actually, I ordered it almost 3 weeks ago, but seems it's on backorder, a common condition for Jet tools.

Like Jeff, I have a Kreg jig on order, also.

I sleep with a Tool Crib catalog under my pillow, and yes, Matilda, I'm addicted.  So shoot me.

(And I'll be ordering a new portable tablesaw, soon.  See other thread.)

    I never met a tool I didn't like!

          Oh ...

it's been here for a long time!

I buy most of my tools mail order .... I try to find everything reconditioned first too ...

Think it goes back to my metal head days in highschool and all those mail-order black concert tee's and import albums ....

and very much "junkey-like" behavour ..... I'll wait till I have a big enough order to make the box even bigger! Last time was best .. carried the big box in .. the kid just just home from daycare ... I carry the "big box O tools" in ....

and the kids looks up and goes .... "Ohhhhhh .... Daddy big box....."

He's hooked! Of course he helped unpack and test everything ......

I just got a Jet shaper in the mail yesterday. Mail ordered it from frenchy. Cleaned it up last night. Just need to finish running a temporary 220 cord over to it today so I can test it, then figure out for sure where I want it so I can install a permanent outlet.

Just today arrived a 3 pack of butt crack resistant extra long t-shirts from Duluth Trading - a deal at $20.  Not bad for 3 long sleeve t-shirts with pockets.

I got mine a couple of months ago.

            Hunter green. 3 for 19.99.

Also got a pair of those suspenders that only have two legs. Wide too. Beefy trucker's suspenders.

Duluth sent me an email, asking how I liked them. Told them they were pretty good. Only concern that I had was that the pockets are almost centered in the tees.

Looks to me like the pocket location was determined in relation to the center of the front of the tee shirt. For the smallest size... Then just left there for all the rest of the sizes. By the time you get to my size, there is so much more shirt to the outside of the pocket, than between the pocket and the center... That the pocket almost looks like it is in the center. (I also wondered aloud how long the shirts would last. They are not the strongest tees I have worn... But then again, they are BY FAR not the flimsiest...)

The lady wrote back and offered to send three more tee shirts for free. I wrote back and told her that wasn't necessary. That my email was strictly meant to be feedback, not a complaint. I ordered and paid for three tees, and I got them. That they were perfectly adequate, and that I would probably get more when these wear out.

My email WAS meant to be feedback, and not a complaint. I was careful to word it to be recognizable as such. Their response was still one of being concerned that I be happy with the purchase. I think this reflects very well on the company.

Mine were a medium size, so not much pocket off-centeredness. The shirts did seem a little thin, but like you said, not the thinnest I have owned.  We'll see how they hold up.  I figured the price was worth it for 3 shirts in any case.

I have ordered from Duluth quite a few times (we often get two catalogs since my wife has ordered Christmas presents for me from them) and have had good luck with them, but never gotten an email like you did.  I remember way back they were looking for people to test out new products, which I offered to do, but they never wrote back.

Me and the boy got to open the kreg jig today as promissed...

next boy not so exciting for me .... maybe a little more for him ...

while cruising for tools ... I saw a talking "bear in the big blue house" animal ...

so that's next to hit the porch.

OK ... who am I kidding .... the talking bear will be fun for me too .....

Remember back in the old days of the 80's when Tool Crib was" Acme Electrics Tool Crib of the North", and they had the best 2-3 page ad in FHB and FWW(I would pour over those ads for hours) I knew most of the phone operators by name, and they knew me! I would space out my purchases so I had a box everyday.... I figure in a couple more months I will have the credit cards paid off for those reckless spending days of the 80's.....okay I'm lying....but it could have been that bad....if not for all those government HUD houses...they justified alot of capital outlay.

Finally found the SS screws I needed at Mcfeels.com.  Was disapointed! I had hoped that 200 screws would have been in a bigger box.....the biggest thing in it was the catalog.
