I’m terrible with wood species. We just closed on our next project in Ferndale and when we picked up the carpet we found some interesting wood.
This flooring is 2 1/2″ like standard oak, but its pretty blond and there’s almost no grain showing.
we found newspaper in the wall from 1941, but we also found evidence of an old renovation, plus with the nob & tube wiring, i’m thinkin’ its closer to a 20’s house.

I'd love to post a pic, but i'm a computer idiot. When I hit attach nothing happens. My pop up blocker is off too.
I'd say by the look of it it's either white oak or ebony.
It looks like maple to me.
and bleached.

Bleached twice maybe?
Someone should tell MSA1 to close the window as there's snow all over that floor.

I get a couple good laughs every night on BT. That's a good one.
MSA1 has great faith in the capabilities of the BTers.

As he should.
Yes, there are many miracle workers that post here.

But where does the white go when the snow melts?
Turns yellow and stains the floor underneath. I learned this in the thread about cleaning concrete chutes in forms.
kinda looks like what I'm seeing out my window tonight. SNOW!
Wasn't it just 60 something degrees????

I haven't heard that joke in years! Brings back some fond memories from the fishing / boatbuilding years.

birch?
Gosh! That's the flatest 2-1/2" flooring I have never seen!

if there is no grain showing that really limits the possibilities. that eliminates mahogony, oak, ash, and any soft wood. i'd lay a bet without seeing a picture that it's maple, or possibly birch, both of which are close grained, and used for flooring.
sand it down. you'd be amazed what a good sanding and finish will do to an apparent disaster. if it's marred or there are nail holes in it , so what, some people pay extra for that. lol

Looks like WHITEWOOD.

Okay, Okay, Guess I should post before my first beer. If I can figure out how to get a pic posted on this stupid computer, i'll show you what it looks like.
I was just hoping by description (combined with the BT brain trust) I could get an idea as to what it might be.
May be birch or maple, but its not white oak. There was a white oak patch and it didnt match.
More than likely my floor guy will be over before I figure out how to put pics up so I guess this was a moot post.
It takes a little time to download (your pics).
What I do, when posting an attachment, is move the cursor into the upper right-hand corner of the window where you'll see the little hourglass thingy
Slurp on a beer, or some Snapple....then hit done when your pic I.D. shows up.
If it's taking forever for pics to upload, you probably have it in high resolution straight from the camera. Make a copy of the image and use your photo manipulation software to reduce its size to about 480 pixels high x "whatever" wide. The resulting pic will upload easily and it will be easier for us to download on our end.

I dont even get that far. I hit the attach files button and nothing happens.
I have to turn off my Norton and then it still takes a while for it to pop up. Sometimes I have to go to preview post and then back to attachments.
Do you click fast or slowly? On some websites, for whatever reason, a button may not respond to a quick click, but will when I click slowly. Worth a try, anyway.

This site will help you understand quarter-sawn wood and how the grain differs from (what is now) standard sawing: http://www.allwoodwork.com/article/woodwork/plainorquartersawn.htm
So convenient a thing it is to be a reasonable Creature, since it enables one to find or make a Reason for everything one has a mind to do. --Benjamin Franklin
Note that you hardly ever see quarter-sawn oak anymore, since folks like to see the grain of oak. Quarter-sawn oak has a very straight, smooth grain, kinda like luan only moreso. If you can see the edge of a board you'll see the "traditional" oak grain pattern.
But there were lots other woods used in the old homes -- often whatever was available locally.
Also be aware that, especially on quarter-sawn wood, The grain will be finer on slower-growing trees. If you have wood from old-growth trees it will usually have a much finer grain (for the same species) than wood from younger trees, especially "farmed" trees.

Likely candidates:
Birch, Beech, Hard Maple, Sycamore, Poplar, Basswood. Almost no grain it's probably maple or birch.
Guess we'll find out tomorrow, the floors guy's coming by.

The floor guy came today
(drum roll)
Its maple.
Thanks for playing, next time i'll figure out how to post a pic before asking a question like this.
Ahh, you don't get off that easy. What kind of maple?
Old Maple.
You were close but no prize. 3 way tie for maple
I could still be right!!!
It might be reclaimed timbers from the Newport tuna fleet...
they used maple on some of the finer doors..Wars of nations are fought to change maps.
