Received a call from an online outfit called http://www.everycontractor.com/default.asp trying to sign me up as some featured contractor. Didn’t want any license info, etc., took my word for quality, time in business, etc. Bottom line was – and I had to decide that instant – $399 to be the guy they recommend in this area when queries came in.
Maybe my years are catching up to me, but it just didn’t feel right. I searched this site for info, but found nothing. Anyone have any dealings with this outfit, and are they on the level? Do they take a commission on a referral if you get the job?
I have no need for them – I prefer referrals, as I’m sure most of you do also – but there are the occaisional slow times, and was wondering if this would be a viable source of new clientel.

Nick,
They are basically the same as service magic, contractor.com, reliable remodeler, renovation experts, etc. The are lead service providers with different levels of exposure. You were asked to be the "featured" builder or remodeler because they wanted to "bang you hard". The same leads are spread throughout your area no matter what. You can sign up for the free services and receive the same amount of leads. Thats if they haven't been hammered by everyone in a 100 mile radius before you even see them.
I do not recommend service magic because they will send you leads that you don't want and charge you anyway. The best one (and probably the largest) is contractor.com. They will send you leads by email and you have the opportunity to buy it or reject it. They will give you a free listing and their leads are fairly fresh. At least it dosn't cost you a dime until you want it to. Renovation experts.com is another good one. If you consider these good lead sources at all.
Comments anyone?

Thanks. I guess I don't surf as much as I should - too busy working - never heard of them. Actually, not true, I had heard of them in passing, just didn't realize what they were about. Thanks for the info. Glad I didn't bite on the 'Featured' deal.

Service Magic offered the ability to pick and choose leads to me. This was in their earlier years when they were trying to sign-up contractors, but the program is still avaliable if you push them. I can accept or reject, but their program called Pro-something charges for all leads sent.
In recommending SM to others, SM wanted to set them up on "pay for all leads sent" basis, but with some insistance they put my felow contractors on a pick and choose program. Their sign-up was $100.00 when I signed up, but the offer was to pre-purchase an additional $100.00 of pick and choose leads and the $100.00 sign-up fee would be credited to other pick and choose future leads.
I can say that SM has worked for me rather well.

pretty much...
boss signed up for one at work, can't remember the exactly which one, and when he tried to cancel it they said sure....but
they didn't
so he was billed every month for about 6 months and had to keep calling the CC company to contest the charge.
Not sure if they canceled it this month or if he'll get charged again this month.

Can you imagine if they knew they were trying to hard sell Nick Nuke Em? LMAO
They are little guys in the leads biz... and to these folks leads are a commodity.
SM will likely give you many more leads. I'd just skip servicemaster and put up an ad on Craigslist weekly. They are giving the newspapers a hard run and their ads are free.
This said... it's all just newspaper/yellow page selling on price junk leads for the most part. Sell 1 in 10 and your doing pretty well.
When we set up a guy to do what we do we actually hone their skills, give them some sales training, pep talks and then we make their phone ring. Last spring we set up Tim in North York and he got 35 leads in the first 10 days. When we pass on a lead--they are the only one that sees it.
You can do that for the reno biz... just have to set up your own little website and get it optomized properly.
Good Luck guys,
