Client wants to put a skylight in this ceiling. Checked the eaves, looks like roof is 2×6 thick. Any idea what i will find once I cut open the ceiling?
That seems like a massive span for those beams. There’s a skylight in another part of the house, but its in a room where the ceiling isn’t sooo long.
Thx!

sorry for the quote post but it's the only way for me to reply to a thread when the first poster.
Could be a SIP roof system. Structural Insulated Panel.
In milder climates it could be a solid wood roof -- I'm thinking I heard the term "car siding" about 60 years ago, used to refer to 2x (or thicker) tongue-and-groove planks. (Though now it appears that that term is used for plain old 1x siding.) Typically each piece would have two tongues and two grooves.
could be double.
Depending on age and location, it could be that there is a 2x6 roof framed on top of the exposed ceiling and insulated with fiberglass batts. I've seen an assembly like this disassembled by the wind.
ceiling????
Assuming it is a flat roof and no attic, it could be coventional framing (joist/rafter) with batt insulation and the T & G planks nailed to framing. Not uncommon back in days of cheap engergy. Planks are probably blind nailed, but you might check to see if you can see a nail pattern..
Does the plank ceiling run over the beams or is it cut and fitted between the beams? If the latter, it maybe the the beams are larger than they appear.
What does the facia look like? If it is a flat roof, that might give you some idea of what's behind it.
They make or used too, 3x and 4x T & G decking that could span large distances, but I doubt that it could span as far as the picture.
Why not disassemble around the stove pipe and look rather than guessing?
Ok, so skylight I saw in another part of the house, the ceiling is much thicker. Thinking that there are ijoists in that ceiling and those 4x6 are just for show.
as far as opening up around the stovepipe, is have to scaffold to get up there.
thinking of bailing on this project. Too much risk for the effort.
