I’ve got a beast, and she lives in tick and skeeter country. 130#. We’ve been using Frontline, and it works. Now I see K-9 Advantix, says it deals with mosquitos, too, but the largest dosage is 55# and up.
Frontline plus goes from 89-132#, and works, but no skeeter protection.
Any one out the using the Advantix on a moose?

My dog will lick you...or was that a rehtorical question<G> I need a dump truck, baby, to unload my head
If you want to protect your dog from heartworm, my understanding is that you have to take care of the mosquitos too. We use something called "Heartguard" and give it the year around (live in Michigan). You can give it only in summer, but then have to have the dog's stool checked once a year for signs of heartworm. The vet sells it to us--I think you give so many pre-measured doses in 55 lb. increments.
Yup, if advantix keeps the mosquitos from biting...not big on medication, one less is more better IMHO I need a dump truck, baby, to unload my head
Heartworm check is a blood test, not stool. Nothing keeps mosquitos from biting 100%, not enough at least to prevent heart worm.
Our little guy get the "brown" (11-20# does) of Revolution, they go up to "plum" (130#).

Revolution doesn't seem to affect ticks, a major problem round here I need a dump truck, baby, to unload my head
My two pups are Mastiff/St.Bernard mix. They're about 150 lbs. now and buying Frontline from our otherwise excellent Vet was really spendy....ticks are the big problem here.
Found I could get the stuff on the internet for about 2/3rds the price....same stuff.

Thanks, but I'm not trying to use Advantix for heartworm medication/ prevention...just thought if it works on ticks and fleas that the mosquito prevention would be a bonus...the bites have gotta make dogs itch, too<G> I need a dump truck, baby, to unload my head
Like almost all the online drug sales... the stuff on the net is likely fake and may not contain what it says it does. Best to get it from the vet since his/hers is likely to be the real stuff . Most of the fake stuff comes from Mexico or somewhere off shore and may be nothing at all just the box is a good look alike. In the worst cases, the drugs are very poor quality or may contain contaminants that you don't want to have in your pet.
While that may happen, it hasn't happened to me, yet, though I do appreciate your concern. I already get Frontline over the internet, no problem...I get all my mother-in-law's stuff on line, hoping that it might be fake...naaah... and she's still kicking<G>...her grandson, who sells pharmaceuticals says the same as you. Are you in the biz? LOL I need a dump truck, baby, to unload my head

I use to be in the business 10 years ago but no longer. From you post you've now got two people who either were or are in the pharamceutical business telling you not to do what you insist on doing. I have nothing to gain by it either way but how would you feel if your dog dropped over dead one day because of it? Who you gonna contact to seek some satisfaction? You gonna try and go after the online seller?
Suppose you weren't in construction or didn't know the first thing about it and you decided to have a whole house built by the first strange guy that comes to your front door. Suppose also , that you have two friends who have been in the construction business 20 years or so and they tell you not to do it too. Are you still gonna blow them off and go with the stranger at your door? What are the chances that you'll get a quality house?I could see giving your mother in law the stuff but not your dog. The ledgitimate company who makes your dog's meds put out flyers telling their vet customers that fake pills are being sold over the internet. Why would they go to the trouble of doing that if their product was still being pushed through on line sales? The answer is they wouldn't?
So, the people who are pushing this stuff on line must be getting it from some off shore company. If this offshore company had a good product why would they try to disguise it as something already being sold through regular vets? The answer to that question is because they making cheap fake and selling it at ####premium price. Suppose they screw up making this drug, do you think they're going to pull the pills and start over or are they going to package them up in fake wrappers and send them out on the market just like normal? For that matter, what's to keep them from filling the pills with simple sugar or starch just to make a buck? Nothing! At the very best, your supporting a crooked company who's stealing from original manufacture. No different than buying bootleg music or video tapes.
Not one bit different either then illegals contractors canvasing neighborhoods to stir up business and undercutting legitamate contractors in the area.
Man, you lost me there...I don't about you, but my wife's nephew went into drugs after being a stockbroker who recommended a lot of folks get heavily into MCI...not exactly someone who's judgement anybody trusts<G>Are you saying that any and all of the companies selling meds on the internet are peddeling bogus goods? I'm not trying to get into it with you, I really am interested. Here's what I get:http://www.petsuppliesnet.com/detail.htm?ProductID=76Is this really fake? It does work. Snort:
We live on Nantucket Island, big tick and skeeter country. We have been using some brewers yeast (we add it to their food) and a spray that contains neem and citronella as repellents and we get their blood tested regularly for heartworm. If conditions gets really bad (lots of mosquitos) we'll use heartguard as a preventitive. It's a definite compromise but we're uncomfortable with using insecticides indiscriminately.
As to the stuff you can buy on the net, there is a risk of counterfeit, so it pays to find a reputable source and stick with it, it may cost a little bit more but it's probably more than worth it. As I understand it, the biggest risk is out of date product or product that is intended for sale in other countries, that does not meet US standards.

We have done the brewer's yeast in the past. Used to work, then a few years ago, the little tiny deer ticks started invading...Frontline Plus has made all the difference...I hates ticks<G>I'm sure there is counterfeiting, just haven't seen the hard evidence...and most of the sites state the expiration dates.I grew up in farm country with all kinds of animals, pets, and vets...maybe I just have a different take on paying a vet almost twice as much as a net vendor...thanks, though.Still haven't heard from anyone about Advantix<G> I need a dump truck, baby, to unload my head

Not familiar with Advantix but I've been a dog musher for 20 yrs in Mn. & I use a cattle wormer (also fly & tick repellent) as a heartworm preventive & a secondary wormer. Most effective on intestinal round worms.
The brand name is Ivomec & active ingred. is ivermectin.dose is .1 ml/11 lbs body weight per month thru HeWo. season. Can usually be found at any ag coop or feed store & purchased over the counter. ( no 'script needed ) Some documented cases of poisoning in the Collie breeds. I've used it with no problems in Alaskan huskies, my German Sheps. and a variety of lap dogs with no ill effects. With the approval of my vet by the way.
Very inexpensive way to go compared to other prescribed meds. on the market, plus reliability isn't an issue. Good luck N.B.
