I’m Dryer in the process of restoring a 1909 home, the kitchen has been rezone several times (most recently not very well) and on the floor I have a carpet (1980s) glued to tile (1970s) over 3/8″ partial board nailed to original wood floor. My problem is: between the partial board and the original I&I red pine wood floor there is this 1/8″paper/felt glued to floor stuff. I’ve removed everything from ~3′ s. to see what’s there. What is it and how do I get rid of it (or at least get rid of enough of it) before I sand and refinish the wood floor. And no I don’t have the big bucks it would take to deal with the “A” word.

Jeff, I'm really sorry about the spell checker...

*This sounds familiar. Three years ago, I bought a house around the same age. Previous owner had done alot of remodeling, but the kitchen floor was carpeted. Before moving in I decided to redo the floor. Under the carpet was an old layer of linoleum (20 yrs), under that was another layer of linoleum (much older - 50+ yrs), under that was some pretty nice maple floors. The only problem was that the bottom layer was glued to the wood floor, and when I pulled it up, a nice thick layer of black/brown felt-like backing was left stuck on the floor.Scraping it up was a real pain, an asphalt-like glue was left behind even after scraping the felt backing off. I tried dissolving some the glue? with paint thinner, but that only got things messy. I scraped the majority of the felt off with one of those larger floor scrapers, Then got fed up and rented a sander and sanded the hell out of the floor (I started with the largest grit available - 22 I think). I got it all up that way, but did leave some pretty noticeable marks/gouges on the floor. I just had to explain to my wife that it gave it that "rustic look" I was shooting for. Good luck.
*I used to run into this stuff all the time. Amazingly, most of it is water soluable, so always give water a try first before going to organic solvents. As long as it's wet and gloppy, you're not putting particulates or fibers into the air, so you're safe from the "A" word.-- J.S.
*No need to remind you if you use water (and much of it is water soluable) to go easy and not ruin or at least alter the wood floor below. Best of luck.
