I,ve had a few in my life but Smoke has stuck the longest. My last names literal translation means holy ( as in incense ) smoke. As a kid my buddies used the term to describe my abilities to drift effertlessly in and out of trouble (like smoke). Thought this thread might be interesting…We,ll see.

No offence intended there, Smokey, but I had a dog once that I called "Handyman", mainly 'cause he was always doing odd jobs around the house.

Doc, would it be safe to assume that is your nickname ( DOC ) or are you actually a MD? Smoke
Actually, I'm a DO (pediatrician). Before going to med school I was a cabinet maker, and continue to do remodeling on my own house.
Red, when I was little. During my difinitive years, The Red Moustache Pr__k.

The only nickname I've had that stayed with me for a while was Hank, as in Hank Williams Jr. Some guys I worked with ran into me one night when I was out partying, and claimed I looked like him.TCW Specialists in Custom Remodeling.

Doc, would it be safe to assume that is your nickname ( DOC ) or are you actually a MD?
Close - - DVM actually. I work with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the equivalent of your APHIS/USDA. "Doc" seems to be almost the universal nickname for the Vet-in-Charge at food processing plants.
To avoid confusion, the Johnny-Come-Lately (sorry, doc, I couldn't resist) spells his name with a small "d". I don't mind, if he doesn't.
Piffin, I know words don't really mean much, but some of us have been there too......The pain goes after some time, but the good memories stay.

Thanks, Healer.

Mine's boring.
Piffin is the phonetic pronunciation of my initials, PFN in real life.
I've also been called Byrd, Tio, and Wog
Byrd because I was somewhat animated like a humming bird when younger and can look out of the side of my eye which some folks find distressing
Tio because a fellow worker mis-read my middle initial as a T instead of F and I had lived in New Mexico so he decided it fit me to a T.
Wog was short for Polywog, from another co-worker with a sense of humour. Shingle layers can squat like a frog and my first name can be perverted into Paulli.
Compare my present Piffin to a puffin bird and it looks like I am a one man zoo.

he passed giving a speech at the Veteran's Memorial at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month... 13 years ago.... sure would be nice to hear him call me Ike againMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Hey Mike!
I sure miss my dad too. Today is the one year anniversary of his death. He died at the front door of a local grocery store (heart attack). I get the willies every time I go by the store.
I used to call him "Pop", and he used to call me "Slick". I sure miss being called "Slick".

A guy I work with alot just calls me Buck........now everyone involved with the company.......calls me Buck.......employees..subs.....homeowners....
This current job......the HO's decided to wait for 2 weeks till "Buck" was available.....to do their tile and kitchen cab's.......as the lead carp built my rep up pretty good.....
I show up on the scheduled day......introduced myself as Jeff....and start unloading tools.....the guy says...."Well, we're glad to have ya Jeff....we were waiting for a guy named Buck, but if he's still busy we just have to get started on this kitchen!"
Jeff......or Buck
Growing up, I didn't have many nicknames......
...........nothing seems to rhyme with "Buck"?

nothing seems to rhyme with buck.......You know I couldn't avoid this one......In my early years of teaching, phonics was in, and I was trying to get second graders to come up with rhyming words on their own.......I started with duck; kids came up with cluck, truck, etc......One sweet little girl said, in all innocence, f***....Not one kid batted an eyelash.....I, of course, almost fell off my chair.......
Yeah...I have slight memories comming back now.......grade school.....middle school......OK, there was one or two things that rhyme with Buck!
Gotta love those kids!

Yeah, those kids are guiding us.......Of course, they don't realize we know more than them.......
Piffin,
I'm sorry for your loss.
I wish there were more I could say or do, to help.

Oh, in an effort to get this thread back on track, my father had a nickname.
We all called him Dad. Mom had a couple for him, sometimes they would be ####. Sometimes I go "Hi guy", I dunno, no brains, no pain.
I will get back to you on mine...
My thoughts and prayers are with you. My dad is down the coast from you and it's tough being this far away. If your dad's anything like you, he was quite a man.

Sorry to hear. My dad passed away about a year ago. I'll join the toast to all. Remember the good times, Pif!
Brudoggie
Sorry to hear that Piffin. Mine died a few years back, but a day doesn't go by without him popping into my head at least once. I also use his tools everyday.
My dad doesn't have far to go, and I would like to say some variation of the eulogy I first heard in Four weddings and a funeral, written by W H Auden, called "Funeral Blues".
I doubt I could get past a few words before they had to mop me up off of the floor, but maybe you can find a word or two you can find comfort or inspiration from. Maybe whats counts is what could have been.
In any case, never let it be said that I didn't pervert a Scottish toast>>>
"May the Lord keep you in His handand never close His fist too tight on you."
Piffin, really enjoy the wisdom and advice you share here.
Thought I was going to see my dad pass last year, really hard to take. Now his health is much better. Someday, sure will hate to see it though.
My condolences though. Not that that helps much, but it's all someone else can do.

Sorry for your lose my brother. We'll all meet on the other side one day (well at least most of us). I always think about that kind of lose as I'm sure we all do. The one you grieve for is yourself mainly because youre who's still here.
Lose and gain is a lot like carpentry. I won't even go into it cause I know you know what I mean. I could go on for hours as you know. MAybe you might feel at some point inclined to post a thread about what your Dad had done for you. We all know he did alot for a guy that turned out like you have.
Be well my brother
Namaste

All condolences for your loved one piffin,
My carpenter mentor was my grandfather, who passed 6 years ago.
He is still with me everyday, sometimes in my dreams, which I
find most comforting. For 20 years before his death he schooled me on what to do when he passed. I now have the opportunity to accomplish
those tasks. I live in, and am renovating his house, which was originally constructed in 1917. I am trying to be very careful to restore it to it's original state, in his honor. My shop is actually a barn I helped to build, or at least he let me think I was helping, when I was 12 years old. So the legacy goes on, in me, and in you piffin,
as long as you are alive, that memory of your loved one will remain.
OK, I didn't mean to get teary eyed here.
My screen name thfxr has come from the fact that over the years I have done just about everything you could possibly do in construction. Mostly because I became bored easily, and wanted to try something new.
Or couldn't hold a job, however you want to look at it.
And by screwing a lot of stuff up I have become very experianced at how not to do stuff.
So nowadays I fix stuff,if you need something fixed at your house,
chances are I know how to do it, or at least how not to do it.

Booch has stuck longest as it is just the phonetic easing of Beuche. I've got one that comes from work that occurred from an embarassing comment from one of the accounting clerks. She, a seasoned single person that lives with her parents, once said I looked like her doctor. Guffaws all around the office, and no, it was her hematologist. Can't shake the reference. Glad there is a real "doc" here. There is a lot of authority in that moniker that I find uncomfortable.
Tree. That's about how I'm built. I get way up there and just branch out. Friend of mine in school had an almost identical real name and people were always mixing us up. It was decided at that point by the ROTC Det that if I was tree, he would ever after be dubbed "shrub".
Most current: Brudog ( ie Brewdog) Guy that used to bend nails alongside me tagged that on me. It's a reference to my love of the beverage, particularly in my young adult days.
In college: Bah! As in Bah humbug. Had a bad attitude back then.
Nicknames given to me at various times by co-workers:
" Little gestapo(spelling ?) mother @#$%&%$"
Fuzzy Haired Little Bast...
Lefty
The infamous a..hole

One day someone from the plant called in on the radio and called me "Short little fat buddy" - like Roscoe used to say to call Boss Hog.
The name stuck after that. Now even DW and kids call me that. How do they get deer to cross at those yellow road signs?
I've been called a lot of things, but just "Hey Heinlein!" is usually what I hear.
