I have done this when the limb was blocking my sat dish. 3 12 ga #6 and a 3" limb came off. I live in the woods though.
During one of our rare ice storms the POCO crews shoot branches that could fall and take out the power lines.

Yeah, I read the comments and felt they were a little harsh. In my neighborhood (north of BFE), gun shots are a daily occurrence. If I saw someone shooting into a tree, I'd figure they were shooting a squirrel or raccoon. If I knew they were trying to shoot down a branch I'd probably offer to help.Thank goodness that old man was just trying to remove a limb, imagine if he needed to remove a stump.DC
I used to harvest Mistletoe for the Holidays that way, shoot it down with a .22. A full garbage bag could net ya 40 bucks.
