Hello and greetings from Amsterdam,
I am hanging some doors and windows here but as usual having some problems, mainly a gap between the side of the door and the jamb. I cut all my hinge mortises flush with both surfaces but when I drop in the hinge pins there is a gap ,sometimes 1/4″or more. Mind you not every time, but enough to make me wonder what the heck I am doing wrong. If I sink the hinge on either the door or the jamb in, then the door will bind so ,please help me out here. I look forward to your answers. Thanks, dan

Are your doors manufactured with a bevel, and are you locating this correctly when installing your hinges?
Welcome to Breaktime Dan. I'm an electrician so I don't have any advice on the door, I couldn't hang one to save my life but I can make one shoot sparks (Not much call for this.) but it is always fine to see new folks on the board. Don't worry too much I'm pretty sure that one of the many knowledgeable carpenters will provide the information you want. In the mean time my post will help keep the thread at the top of the stack.
2 possible causes:
I) Doors (slabs) these days often come with both edges beveled so they are not "handed".
The hinges need to be mounted with the knuckles on the long side of the bevel.
B) Low quality hinges these days are junk. Lots of slop(play) and inconsistent "reveals". the hinges, and how they are mounted , in effect determine your reveal or margin(the gap between the door and the jamb) Some times you can shim your hinge leaves to compensate, or even bend the knuckles. or you can spring for some better quality hinges.

Do not try this at home!

I'm not a door expert either. But I'd come help you with them just to take some coffee shop breaks.

What part of carpentry are you an expert in? Tight joints? ; )
If you go over to help, please post pictures! If you remember...Any jackass can kick down a barn, but it takes a carpenter to build one.
.......huh?........Ditch
LOL : )Any jackass can kick down a barn, but it takes a carpenter to build one.
Are your hinge gains cut to an even depth? What are you cutting them with? Chisel, router, router plane(my fav)?
hey Ethyl,
I know this might be a tupid question, but did you mount one of the hinges backwards?
Where there's A wheel there's a way, got any wheels?
Hi . Take the hinge that you say did not show the reveal and switch it with the one that does. If that solves the problem then it's the hinge quality. If its the same large reveal with both hinges then its the door which is probably beveled. Put the bevel square on the door edge to check for level.
