hello-
i got volunteered to put a roof on the playhouse at my kids’ preschool. it’s small, each half is 3-1/2 feet by 6-1/2 feet. i sheathed it with 3/4 plywood. the director said she wants cedar shingles.
some places say galvanized nails are okay, some say they will leave streaks on the shingles, but i can’t find anything else, at least not in a 3/4″ or a 7/8″ length. stainless steel? aluminum? ring shank?
my reputation with all the 4 and 5 year olds depends on how well this turns out.
also, the kids will be playing right up under that roof, so i can’t have any nailheads protruding from the underside of the sheathing.
while i’m at it, another question: do i need to do felt paper on this? seems like overkill for this thing.
thanks.

you should be using 11/4" galvanized cedar shingle nails,(not roofing nails)
the cedar nails have a small head on them, also available in ss.
you will need to pack up the sheathing with another layer to prevent the nail tips from poking through.
roof nails aren't exposed to the weather or at least shouldn't be so worry not. For my roof I used double dipped gavlvinized nails for my Max sidewall nail gun...but I would imagine ribbed galvanized siding nails will be just fine.
On my sidewalls I used SS siding nails...they cost about 3X as much but ARE exposed to the weather. I would have to say more people than not just use galvie finish nails even on sidewalls and don't seem to have any issues. It also depends on where you're located. If you were close to the ocean there's no way I'd use anything but SS....For me...I take no chances and went SS on the sidewalls.
Double dipped for the roof.
If you're doing it you may as well do it right and use felt paper or skip sheathing..or felt and cedar breather.
Note: They DO make roof shingles where you need no felt paper but I'd think its a special order.
