Hello. Which strap ties do you guys prefer when tying a new exterior wall top plate to an existing exterior wall top plate?
Simpson recommended I use a cs14 (coil strap).
This is for an addition to my home.
Thanks.

Simspon CS14.
Or nothing.
Usually nothing (except nails).
Are you going up or out? Are you in a high-wind area?
Thanks Mike. I'm going out. No high wind.
Living in Florida, those are a must on all our projects. Keep in mind even if you are not in a "high wind" area, storm-spawned tornadoes are still possible almost anywhere.
My point is any kind of connectors are relatively inexpensive and easy to install "during" construction yet really hard to retrofit later. An addition might use $50-100 worth of these but it can be the best money you spend if it keeps the roof on later.
Just my 02 cents of course.
Thanks Mike. That's a good point. I am just outside of Tornado Alley so I might as well build for it while i'm at it.
One more question, when using a cs14 to butt two top plates together do you just use one strap?
From the images I have seen the strap can go either on the side or top of the plate.
Is this correct?
