My brother in Philadelphia would like to get a white coating for a fairly new flat roof on his townhouse.
I wanted to know what kind of roof it is so I could make a recommendation. He asked the roofer and couldn’t get a usable answer. I also suggested he look at the roof to see if anything is printed on it and I haven’t heard about that. My small knowledge makes me think it is probably EPDM–never having seen it–but that seems like the most basic roof.
So does anyone out there have experience with white coatings? I have seen some advertised as roll on with a two step process. I- have a hard time believing that it doesn’t matter what you are putting it down on top of.
Is this just a fiasco waiting to happen? I would love to get the inside scoop.

So you haven't seen it and don't know what it is, and the guy installing it and the guy paying for it cannot either one of them give it a name...
and you want us to do WHAT?

I am so disappointed. . . I expected magic from this board! Usually there is pure gold running in the posts. But I suppose you have to have something to work with!Oh well. Maybe I will get the roofer's number and find out for myself. . . (Thanks for the Henry's idea).
don't be disappointed...
it's a compatability issue more than anything...
it is important to know what is there....
so you will be able to figure out what ya need...

Similar to GIGO (gargabe in/garbage out)
This one is a NINO (nothing in/nothing out)
We did a tear off on a flat roof beach house once. The roof had four layers (imagine that). From bottom to top was hot, roll roofing, another roll roofing, and then the white snow.
When we got the top layer off however, the other layers were soaked through. Was lots of rot. Don't know if it was because of the white snow though. We assumed it was.
I know the white snow works real well on metal roofs because it is designed to expand in the heat and contract in the cool. Don't know if this helps much.My brain + his brawn = a perfect team
forget hanry until you know what you have.not all materials are compatible and one can destroy another!

Henrys - They ou't'a have something that works, try'em all in strips and write us a report in 10 years as to durability<G>
Come on now - the only Henry's I know of would eat holes in EPDM

In the southwest there are spray foams that they use that are white. I know nothing about them, especially if they are possible with the cold and snow you'll see in philly. Here are a few links.

Here are three companies that have coatings for a wide array of roofing products;
Karnak, Truco and ER systems. Google them and look at their choices- once you know the roof type.

Try a google of Adeso role roofing. I did my flat roof a few years ago. I believe white was available. I went thru Harvey Ind.

Sorry I didn't mean to sound testy--my sense of humor is not internet approved. Thanks for the thoughts everyone--I am going to track down the roofer and find out what the heck they put up there.
