My beloved old brick fireplace needs to be “cleaned up” as part of a larger remodeling project. How can I achieve a white-washed brick effect, i.e. lighten it yet retain the look of old brick?

Joan,
Depending on whether you want to clean the brick back to its original color or you want a new color on the brick will determine which products should be used. A good masonry detergent such as ProSoCo SureKlean 600 would probably work for cleaning only. You can read about it at http://www.sweets.com/ Click on Division 04, then scroll down to 04900 Masonry Restoration & Cleaning.
Other links that will give you insight as to what is possible are http://www.bia.org The Brick Institute of America or World of Concrete web site at the following address http://www2.worldofconcrete.com/HomePage/WOCHomePage/1,1156,'problem_clinic~br_prbclinform^MC',00.asp
If all this confuses you further feel free to email me.
