I’m looking at putting in a whole house fan. We live in Charlotte where the summers definatly require AC; however the late spring and early fall would be a great time for a WHF to cut energy consumption. I’m looking at 2 models:

Has anyone used one of these? Other suggestions greatly appreciated.

I installed the HV 1000 here in Philadelphia for a small house and am very pleased with the results.
The instructions are good, just be sure you have the required free air.

Good stuff.
I feel that youd be better off with a solar powered roof mounted exhaust fan on a thermostat. Quieter than a whole house fan and no addition to the power bill.
I don't see an attic fan (solar or not) doing me any good in the evenings and at night when it's in the mid 60s outside and upper 70s inside with the house radiating the collected heat from the day.I just purchased the AirScape 1.7 WHF:http://www.hvacquick.com/asfnconfig.php?fm=WHFIt arrived yesterday and I'm installing it today. I'll let you how it turns out.

I assumed the attic fan running would prevent your home from getting uncomfortable. I like it indoors about 75 degrees myself, Set the thermostat for 80 in the attic and let that sucker run. I would think the increased airflow would keep your inside cooler. maybe not? Down here where I is it works great for me.
We are about 90 west of you. I have had them before, have one decomissioned in the old part of the house. With the pollen, humidity, dust, etc they just do not seem to be as good an idea as they used to. Using them at night sucks in so much humidity that the ac seems to have to work more to wring it out.
I have taken more out in recent history and have not seen one installed in 10-20 years. Just my opinion.
Look at back issues of FHB there is an article on installing attic fans so they mimize heat transer when shut off. I agree in spring & fall they are effective at pulling in cool outside air along with scents from the outdoors.
I have considered installing the attic fan in the gable end with controled damper in the ceiling rather than the ceiling to mimize noise. Wonder if anyone has experience with this in residential use? Seems common in commercial bldgs.
I just finished installing the AirScape 1.7 WHF. It is very easy to install. I'm very pleased with its performance. It is pretty quiet even on HI. The grille in the ceiling doesn't look bad at all. It wasn't very warn today - upper 70s - so i'm looking forward to some warmer days to see how well it's going to work.

It was pretty noisy in the rooms that happened to be at that end of the house. Seems as if the ceiling or walls became sort of a sounding board.George Patterson, Patterson Handyman Service
I might be a little late on this post but WTH. I have the same problem where I live, warm, moist summers and no AC. The house is R2000 specs and 2 years old. The advice I've received is that venting hot air out on a continuous basis would create undesirable negative pressure in the home.
The solution was to install a de-hunidifier in the basement and use my existing Venmar TTH heat exchanger in a circulation mode. It draws up the cool dry air from the basement and the warm air to the basement. Only had it for 2 summers but it has completely made up for the lack of AC.
A la prochaine...
I guarantee you your windows and doors and walls leak to much for any kind of negative pressure to build up. The only time I ever heard of pressure problems is with modular room homes where the walls are engineered in a warehouse and assembled like giant leggos. everything fits so tight that they install an air exchanger to keep air pressure even. sounds crazy.
I've had my AirScape 1.7 WHF in foir a couple weeks now and I'm sold on it. There have been several nights where we would have had the AC on just to cool the house down from the days heat. As soon as the sun goes down behind the trees and the outside temp drops below the inside temp I turn it on. Very quiet and VERY comfortable.
Dont buy the AIR Vent INC "Whisper Aire"..... whisper my #### sounds like a jet taking off.
